If you've been dropping into missions, you've probably seen the Galactic War map and noticed that planets change status. You might be wondering what it all means, how your actions contribute, and what happens when a war ends. Based on how the community plays, here’s a straightforward explanation of the system.

What is the Galactic War?

The Galactic War is the persistent, community-driven meta-game that every player participates in. Think of it as the big strategic picture. Every mission you complete on a planet contributes "Influence" to the overall war effort against a faction (the Terminids or the Automatons). The combined Influence from all players worldwide determines whether we advance, defend, or lose ground on the map. It’s not a personal storyline; it’s the shared progress of the entire Helldivers community.

How Do We Win or Lose a Major Order?

The game sets Major Orders, which are community-wide objectives like "Liberate Planet X in 48 hours." Winning or losing these depends on the total Influence generated by players on that specific planet within the time limit.

In general, most players will see a Major Order and focus their missions on that planet. This creates a natural concentration of the player base. If enough players complete successful missions there, we hit the required Influence and win the order, usually earning rewards like Medals. If not, the order fails, and the enemy often launches a counter-offensive. There’s no individual penalty for failure, but the war front moves closer to Super Earth.

What Happens When We Push to an Enemy Home World?

When the community successfully liberates all sectors leading to an enemy's home system (like Terminid Space or Automaton Space), a special 48-hour Attack Event is triggered. This is the final assault. During this time, players can run missions on the enemy home world itself. If the community generates enough Influence in those 48 hours, that entire faction is defeated and removed from the war.

It’s an all-hands-on-deck effort. Most experienced players will jump into these events because they are the climax of a campaign. However, these events are usually very difficult, with high-level missions becoming the norm.

Can We Actually Lose the Whole War?

Yes. If the community consistently fails Major Orders and defensive campaigns, the enemy can push all the way to Super Earth. This triggers a final 48-hour Defend Event for Super Earth itself. If players fail to generate enough Influence to defend it, the war is lost. The campaign then ends, and a new one begins shortly after.

In practice, wars are designed to be challenging but winnable. Losses often happen when the player base is split, focusing on too many different fronts, or when high-difficulty missions on critical planets fail repeatedly.

What Are Defend Events and Why Should I Do Them?

When an enemy counter-attacks and invades one of our sectors, a Defend Event is triggered on its capital planet. These are time-limited (usually 150 minutes) and feature specific city-style maps. Most players find these missions worthwhile because they often offer double XP rewards. The objectives are also usually more straightforward, often focusing on evacuation or point defense.

Successfully defending a capital stops the enemy advance and often sets up a chance to retaliate. Failing it means the entire sector is captured, moving the front line closer to Super Earth.

What Rewards Do I Get for the Galactic War?

Your personal reward comes from completing Major Orders, which grant Medals, the primary currency for unlocking items in your Warbond. There are no unique armor sets or weapons locked behind war participation in Helldivers 2. The communal reward is the progression of the narrative and the satisfaction of achieving a goal as a player base. Winning a war resets the map with new conditions and often introduces new threats or changes for the next campaign.

Common Player Behavior and Tips

Follow the Major Order: The most efficient way to contribute is to focus on the active Major Order planet. That’s where the community effort is concentrated.

Check the Galactic Map: Before dropping, glance at the map. Planets with active Defend or Attack Events (marked with icons) are where your efforts have the most strategic impact.

Difficulty Matters: Higher difficulty missions generate more Influence per completion. A team succeeding on a harder mission contributes more than several teams on trivial ones.

It’s a Marathon: Don’t burn out trying to single-handedly save a planet. The war progresses based on millions of missions. Do your part, but the system is designed for the collective, long-term effort.

Losing is Part of the Story: A lost sector or even a lost war isn’t a failure of the player base; it’s a dynamic part of the game’s narrative. A new campaign starts fresh, sometimes with adjusted difficulty or new scenarios.

Remember, your individual mission success always matters for your own progression, but for the Galactic War, it’s all about the combined totals. Focus on completing missions, especially where the game directs community attention, and you’re doing your part for Managed Democracy.
